Iraq to start hearings on legality of KRG exports

Iraq's supreme federal court will begin hearing a lawsuit in May, brought by the oil minister over the legality of independent exports by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The court held a session today to consider the lawsuit, which challenges independent KRG exports and asks the provincial government to return revenues from previous sales to the federal government.

The court has asked to hear the view of officials, including the federal and KRG prime ministers, and oil and finance ministers on 6 May.

The dispute over the KRG's independent exports has been one of the main hurdles to resuming exports from state-owned NOC's Kirkuk fields. Iraq's state-owned marketer Somo's push for exclusivity in marketing the country's crude has stalled any restart of Baghdad-controlled Kirkuk exports through the KRG-run pipeline from Kirkuk to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
