Argus is pleased to announce the launch of a new palm oil mill effluent (POME) fob Malaysia/Indonesia price assessment.

POME is a waste-based feedstock that is collected at palm oil mills during the palm oil production process. It has been acknowledged as a suitable feedstock for biofuels in the EU Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II).

EU biodiesel mandates are rising, and POME looks set to become an increasingly important feedstock. As it is waste based, it can be counted double against biodiesel mandate requirements in RED II.

As the POME market is still in its infancy, more transparency and information are required on the quality and sustainability of the feedstock. Argus expects that with this new price assessment, industry participants will gain an in-depth insight into the market, valuable data and a transparent pricing mechanism for POME. This price assessment will be based on Argus’ engagement with market participants to gather data, while ensuring the credibility of sources. Here are some details of the methodology:

  • Total fatty matter (TFM): minimum 95pc
  • Moisture and impurities (MIU): maximum 3pc
  • Free fatty acids (FFA): minimum 50pc
  • Currency/unit: US dollars/tonne
  • Timing: the pricing period is 30-45 days after the date of publication
  • Location: fob Malaysia (Port Klang/Pasir Gudang/Lahad Datu) or fob Indonesia (Dumai/Belawan)
  • Size: 2,000-5,000t bulk
  • Assessment time: time stamp of 5:30pm Singapore, Friday

This will be a weekly assessment produced every Friday by our Singapore office and available in the Argus Biofuels market reporting service. To find out more about this service, please see below.
