Thermal coal prices have settled at comparatively lower levels so far in 2025, finally finding some stability after a tumultuous few years. However, this new pricing paradigm raises several important questions regarding international coal supply, evolving energy mixes, and changing seasonal demand.
The South African market as always is in a state of evolution with key questions surrounding improving rail performance, increasing exposure to Indian demand and energy policy, and ultimately how the market can navigate a sub-$100/t API 4.
